Student Deliberations, Close Up Conversations, and more!

 

Join us for a variety of free, live events to discuss and deliberate current policy issues in our nation and connect with other members of Close Up’s community. These discussions will allow participants to hear different perspectives from experts and each other, consider new approaches to engaging with current issues, and explore different policy proposals. 

 

Preamble Project

Preamble Project

Start Date: Friday, September 17th
Eligibility: Middle School Classrooms (grades 7-8) & High School Classrooms (grades 10-11)

On Constitution Day, join classrooms across the nation for the inaugural Preamble Project–an educational pilot program, in partnership with New Voice Strategies, for classrooms to build a shared understanding of what it means to be American through an exploration of the preamble to the U.S. Constitution.

A Supreme Court Preview

Date & Time: Wednesday, October 13th | 6:00pm (EST)

The next session of Supreme Court starts in October and the Court has a full docket of cases before them. Join us for a conversation on the cases before the court, what to expect, and the outlook of the courts moving forward. Don’t forget to submit your questions on the Supreme Court beforehand to be addressed live!

A Deliberation on Race and Society 

Date & Time: Wednesday, November 10th | 7:00–9:00pm (EST)
Eligibility: High School Students (grades 9-12)

This November, join over 500 high school students nationwide for an online deliberation about Race and Society in the United States followed by a student-led reflection. This event will be held on the Stanford Platform for Online Deliberation and the event is being implemented and designed by high students who participated in Close Up and Stanford’s Learning Deliberative Democracy course.

Facilitation Training 

Date & Time: January 2022 | 7:00–8:30pm (EST)
Eligibility:  High school students who have participated in a Close Up program (grades 9-12)

How can you engage your peers in respectful conversations about controversial social and political issues? Join students who have participated in Close Up programs to learn general practices and principles of facilitation, including how to bring unheard perspectives and hesitant students into the discussionsClose Up will offer opportunities this spring to put your training into practice during national youth deliberations!
